  • The New York Times Project:  the translucent tower as a design

statement and company philosophy

  • The Benefits:  economic and performance benefits of day-lighting and the use of high light transmittance glazing

Susan Brady Susan Brady has been practicing lighting design in New York City for over 20 years. She is the founder and president of SBLD Studio since 1994.

Susan Brady grew up in Edison, NJ. Albeit the home of Thomas Edison and his famous Menlo Park laboratory, where the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph, as well as numerous other inventions were discovered, Ms. Brady did not grow up in this suburban NJ town with a burning desire to be an architectural lighting designer. It wasn't until pursuing her BFA in Environmental Design at Parsons School of Design in New York City that architectural lighting design even entered her mind. A required course attracted her interest in the subject and led to a summer internship program offered by the International Association of Lighting Designers. Upon graduation, Ms. Brady accepted a position with the architectural lighting design firm of Fisher Marantz in New York City. What was originally intended to be a yearlong study of lighting became a 10 year extensive training course (aka career) including positions with Fisher Marantz, Skidmore Owings and Merrill and Horton Lees Lighting Design. With a firmly established base Ms. Brady founded her own firm, Susan Brady Lighting Design, in 1994. In 2003 with the addition of a partner the firm's name was changed to SBLD Studio.

Throughout her career Ms. Brady has been responsible for the interior and exterior lighting design of a broad variety of project types including performance venues, public buildings, corporate interiors, major transportation facilities, academic and healthcare institutions, hotel and retail. Her work spans architectural styles from historic preservation to modernism has received numerous awards for projects such as the Chiangi Airport Rail Station, the Frist Center for Visual Arts and JFK International Arrivals Terminal 4.
Education:
Ms. Brady received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Environmental Design from Parsons School of Design in New York City, with an emphasis in architectural design and history.
Professional Affiliations:
Susan Brady is a corporate member of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES). Ms. Brady is also a member of the Montclair Historic Preservation Commission and a board member of the Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence

Jan Berman Jan Berman is President and Chief Operating Officer of MechoShade Systems, Inc.
Jan literally grew up in the business founded by his father, Joel Berman, the creator of the solar shade industry as we know it today.
As a young man, Jan spent his spare time working at MechoShade during the pioneering years of the early 1970's, a time when the energy crisis created an interest in new energy technology and brought about new ideas in architecture and design. During this time, Jan developed a strong interest in passive solar energy, daylighting, and fenestration issues through numerous meetings and consultations with the late, renown professor John Yelliot of Arizona State University. He also participated in ground breaking studies by Professor Yelliot and the daylighting lab at ASU. Jan also toured Europe and visited and studied numerous interior and exterior, automated window fenestration solutions that were state of the art at that time. This work led to the ground breaking solutions provided for the State of California Office Site 1A building, designed by Sym van der Ryn, known as the Gregory Bateson Building in Sacramento, California, featuring the US's first, fully automated, exterior solar shading system.
Jan Berman graduated from Ithaca College in 1980 with a BS in accounting. While in Ithaca, Jan was also a student of architectural history, including a 6 month stint in London, studying international business and British art and architecture. After receiving his CPA certification, he joined MechoShade in 1982. Throughout his career, Mr. Berman has worked closely with many of the leading designers and architects in helping develop solar shading solutions to their unique building designs and projects.
His first five years at MechoShade were as a field sales representative in New York City, and eventually the New England territory, where he developed national accounts with companies such as Aetna Life. He was promoted to Regional Sales Manager in 1987 and worked to expand the MechoShade sales force by opening sales offices in Chicago and Washington, DC.
Jan was named Vice President of Sales in 1994 and accelerated the expansion of the MechoShade name to wider acceptance in corporate office design, and into new markets, such as healthcare, educational, retail facilities and negotiated a contract with GSA. He set up the current structure of regional sales managers and developed the national sales force to almost 50 representatives.
Jan has worked in product development, implementing ideas resulting from his work with the design community, and helped develop new shade control systems and shadecloths that have both been honored with design awards.
Jan was promoted to current title of President in 1999. Since that time, he has overseen the growth of MechoShade as the leading manufacturer of solar shading worldwide, tripling manufacturing capacity and expanding to international markets. His efforts put MechoShade products at the forefront of “Green” Building and Sustainable Design by participating at the inaugural EnvironDesign conference and becoming a member of the US Green Building Council. More than anything, he has been an influential figure in the unprecedented growth of MechoShade into an international solar shade manufacturer.
Married to his wife, Judy, Jan has two children and resides in Fairfield County, CT.
