Life Cycle Analysis :
Applications and Implications for the Design of Greener Buildings

TONIGHT’S EVENT IS PRESENTED BY NYSERDA,
THE NEW YORK STATE ENERGY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY

Introduction: NYSERDA
Speaker: Wayne Trusty, President,
Athena Sustainable Materials Institute and Athena Institute International

LECTURE TOPICS:

  • Demonstration of the critical need to shift from prescriptive to environmental performance measures and approaches to green building in North America.
  • How life cycle assessment (LCA) offers the best prospect for establishing and achieving true environmental performance measures.
  • A primer on the essence of LCA from a non-practitioner's perspective, including LCA methods, terminology and data sources.
  • A simple tools classification system, how these tools interrelate and where they fit into the green design process.
  • An update on work underway to introduce LCA into green building rating systems.
  • A discussion of the complexity of applying LCA techniques to buildings because of the interrelationships of products in a building systems context, given the nature of a building's life cycle. How all of the individual building products and elements are subject to LCA, and so too is the building as a whole.
  • PLUS, a presentation of the complimentary subject of green building economics and the role of life cycle costing.

Program Sponsors: Benjamin Moore, C/S Group, Forbo, Lutron Electronics, NYSERDA, The New York Real Estate Journal, Tate Access Floors and Zumtobel Staff Lighting.
