Speaker Biographies:

John Krieble:
John Krieble is a NYS registered architect who has worked for 26 years in the public and private sectors in New York City including the last six as Director of Sustainable Design at the NYC Department of Design and Construction. This office, which is responsible for developing the agency's sustainable design program, facilitates the incorporation of sustainable strategies into DDC projects through procurement, contract requirements, research initiatives, grants, and training. Mr. Krieble has also been active on a number of interagency working groups charged with improving the City's construction practices from the standpoint of sustainability. Most recently, he has advised the Mayor's office on the rules and reporting forms for the recently enacted Local Law 86/2005 that requires many city-funded projects to achieve a LEED rating.

Prior to joining the City in 1997, he worked in several private firms including Robert Stern Architects, Ehrenkrantz and Eckstut, Architects, and Croxton Collaborative, Architects.

Sara Caples:
Everardo Agosto Jefferson and Sara Caples founded Caples Jefferson Architects in 1987.

From its start, the practice has been based on the following principles:
     • Address the public realm; at least 50% of Caples Jefferson’s projects are work for the community

     • Design based on research—both the architect’s basic technical and a deeper reading of underlying issues

     • Use architecture to deepen experience of the project’s singularities—of time, of site, of culture

Selected in 1998 as Emerging Voices by the Architectural League, Caples Jefferson’s recent honors include Finalist in the New York Times Capsule Competition and a National AIA Honor Award for the Heritage Health & Housing Headquarters in Harlem and a New York City Art Commission Award for the Weeksville Heritage Center.

Caples Jefferson has employed sustainable design principles on many projects; the Weeksville center is being designed as a LEED Gold project and will be the subject of this talk.

Richard Meilan:
Mr. Meilan serves as Partner-in-Charge and Chief Mechanical Engineer at Kallen & Lemelson, Consulting Engineers, LLP.  In this capacity, he establishes production priorities, assignments for each staff member, preliminary design and checking and is fully responsible for the performance of the Department in all respects.  Mr. Meilan’s professional experience has been concentrated in the areas of design, energy conservation, energy management and sustainable design.  He has over 30 years of experience in designing building mechanical systems and has participated in the design of four LEED certified projects which are currently under construction.
