This lecture will cover:

 
  • Some of the unique challenges and opportunities presented by setting high sustainable targets for small urban developments
  • Looking at the design and construction issues from the perspective of each member of the building team -- Owner, Designer, Contractor
  • Exploring how the success of a green project depends upon the commitment of each player to a sustainable outcome

 CASE STUDY:  453 Pacific Street, Boerum Hill, Brooklyn

  • How early decisions defined the vision and form of the project. 
  • Site description: the shell of a 1920's-era building which had burned and had been vacant for 25 years.
  • Overcoming poor and dangerous access to building site 
  • How architects sought to preserve neighborhood history and character within their designs
  • Determination of most efficient use of limited space for living, storage and recreation.
  • Decision to build green as a core principle with marketable attributes to the community.
  • Elements that informed the design:  
         site analysis and observation
         local zoning issues
         desire for best and most practical high performance outcome
         materials choices
         mechanical systems
         whole building energy analysis was conducted
  • Practical building issues including challenging cleanup of burned-out site
  • Project was named Health House Pilot Project by the American Lung Association

Speaker Biographies:

TONY DANIELS

Tony Daniels is an architect and environmentalist. He is the director of sustainable design at Studio A and WASA, a multi-discipline A/E firm, where his responsibilities include bringing green design to every one of the firm's projects. Mr. Daniels' work has been recognized for excellence by organizations including the US EPA, The World Renewable Energy Congress, the Municipal Art Society, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and the New York Society of Registered Architects.

ROBERT POLITZER

Robert Politzer is the President and founder of GreenStreet Construction & Consulting.  Under Mr. Politzer’s leadership, GreenStreet had grown from a small environmental testing and abatement company to a leading green building firm, operating primarily in the tri-state region.  Mr. Politzer is a LEED accredited professional and was the Chair of the Sustainable Business Task Force of the New York State Environmental Business Association.  He is a former New York City public high school teacher and Adjunct Professor at New York University and the New York City Technical College.  Mr. Politzer holds a B.S. in Biology from Indiana University, and M.A. in Environmental Policy from the University of Michigan, and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Manhattan College.
